Street Name Sign Choices
All upper- or upper- and lower-case letters: The federal MUTCD (sign manual) now calls for Street Name signs to
use both upper-
and lower-case letters. For example Main St and not MAIN ST, or all upper-case (capital) letters.
Flat or Extruded: Street
Name signs are made with Flat or Extruded aluminum backs or blades. The
.080 gauge Flat blades
are the most commonly used in the U.S. Extruded
blades are 1/4-inch thick near the top and bottom edges of the blade
for
greater strength, but cost more to produce because more aluminum is used to make them.
Reflectivity:
Street Name signs are available in Standard Reflective (Engineer Grade), High
Intensity or Diamond Grade
reflective vinyl sheeting. The federal sign
manual, the MUTCD, calls for newer Street Name signs to have High Intensity
Prismatic sheeting, which is the
type used by most cities today when ordering new Street Name signs.
Size: Cities are
required by the federal Highway Administration to use 9-inch blades
(High Intensity sheeting) for streets
with speeds of more than 25 MPH.
Where the speed limit is 25 MPH or less, a 6-inch blade (High Intensity
sheeting)
may be used. A border is optional.
Border: A border around the outside edges of the sign makes it look more finished: Added cost: $2.50
per side.
Prefix and Suffix Size: The prefix and suffix may be made smaller to have the main name stand out more. The use
of smaller suffixes also allows the
sign width to be narrower, reducing the potential for wind
damage. A smaller prefix
and suffix normally is placed in one of
three positions on the sign: Superscript, Center or Parallel Bottom to
the main name.
